But before we take up this exercise the background of the country's independence has to be considered. The land was then in a state of great turmoil. It was torn by bitter communal fellings some of the important Native Princes were dreaming of our political independence. The situation took a worse turn when the age long geographical entity of the country was ruptured by partition. There were horrible communal disturbances all over the land. Millions of shattered refugees flew into India from their ancestral homes in pitiable conditions. All these had their inevitable effects on the country's economy. The refugee problem drained the treasure while agriculture and industry were rotting in their old grooves. Essay on achievements of India after independence

Essay on achievements of India after independence However to the genius of her people and her leaders the country has not only survived but also made tremendous advance in many respects. The most glorious achievement is that India is now an integrated whole from the Himalayas to Cape Comorin. Our independence led to the independence of many other lands but nowwhere else was the government democratically formed as in India. After independence we had several general elections based on adult franchise and each election peacefully conducted resulted in the formation of stable government in the Centre and the States. Indeed India has justly won the admiration of the whole world as the largest democracy with a stable central government. Our policy of non-alignment and doctrine of peaceful co-existence are two great contributions to modern political history. The world at first laughed at these as too unrealistic but everybody has now come to realise their importance. Industrially too we have made great progress. Starting from scratch the country is now humming with quite a no. of steel plants. Successful implementation of several river valley projectshas helped the country to make a great headway in flood control, irrigation, and power generation. Small and cottage industries have been adding to the wealth of the country. India now produces railway locomotives, motor vehicles, aeroplanes, military tanks and the entire commodities of consumer goods for which she had to depend on imports in pre-independence days. In food front the country has attained self-sufficiency an achievement which very few countries in the world can boast of. With the latest know-how of agricultural science, intensive cultivation using high yielding seeds and production of fertilisers in abundance the country has achieved this unique distinction. In engineering industry, textiles, jute, tea India is now a leading country in terms of production. The country progress in the field of primary education, higher education, health, transport have also been noteworthy compared to what it was before independence. With launching of artifical satellite India has made great strides in communication technology.

India's progress in software and information technology has also been remarkable and we are now one of the world leaders in these sectors. India is now sending rockets and missiles for scientific experiment and is considered a responsible nuclear power.

Conclusion

With all these achievements however there are still certain areas which need special attention. One of them is population control. With a growth rate of 2.5% per annum the increased production in food and other commodities is likely to be eaten up soon. An all out effort through intensive family planning campaign with the help of government agencies, social workers and voluntary organisations has to be made to bring the birth rate under control.
