Gulliver's Travels


Gulliver's Travels was the work of Jonathan Swift who had been using satire as his medium for over a quarter of a country. His life was one of continual dis appointment and satire was his complaint and defence against his enemies and against humankind. He did not believe that the age of science was the triumph that a great majority of his country men believed it to be.
Gulliver's Travels is an advanture story involving several voyages of Lemuel Gulliver, a ship surgeon. Because of a series of mishops he ends up on several unknown island living with people and animals of unusual sizes, behavior and philosophy. After each advanture he is able to return to his home in England where he recovers from these unusual experiences and then sets out again on a new voyage.

Gulliver's Travels Summary 

Book-1👉  When the ship Gulliver is travelling on his destroyed in a storm Gulliver ends up on the island of Lilliput where he awakes to find that he has end captured by Lilliputians. Gulliver is treated with compression but he falls from favour as he refuses to support the Emperor's desire to enslave some other Lilliputians. Eventually he is rescued at sea by an English merchant.

Book- 2 👉  Gulliver now is left in the land of the giants. A farmer finds him and tabes him to the queen. At court Gulliver discusses with the king the customs and behavior of his country. In many cases the king is shocked at the selfishness that he hears Gulliver describe. One day as Gulliver looks longingly at the sea, a passing ship rescues him.

Book- 3 👉  In this book Gulliver discovers himself on the Flying island called Laputa. There all are preoccupied with things associated with mathematics and music. From there he goes to Amsterdam and eventually to England.

Book- 4 👉  In this book the pirates leave Gulliver in an island. A herd of ugly despicable human like creatures attack him by climbing trees and defecating on him. He is saved from this disgrace by a horse a Houyhnhnm. He finds that the human like creatures are kept in pens and they are called yahoos. When he returns to England he is repelled by his yahoo family. He buys two horses and spends most of his days with them to be as far away from his yahoo family as possible.
Gulliver's Travels Summary

Swift has at least two aims in Gulliver's Travels besides merely telling a good advanture story. He satirizes the pettiness of human nature in general and attacks the whigs in particular in his novel.
